OROHAKI HONEYDEW

A UNIQUE HONEY SOURCED FROM NATIVE BLACK BEECH FORESTS IN THE FOOTHILLS OF
NEW ZEALANDS SOUTHERN ALPS

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FLOWER NECTAR HONEY & NZ HONEYDEW

Honeydew is a rare & unique form of honey, where bees forage from pristine native Black Beech forests, collecting sap secreted in a symbiotic process, creating honey NOT made from flower nectar.
Impressive properties (10 x mineral content of floral honeys to name one!)
are unique to this honey.
Orohaki New Zealand Honeydew is harvested by bees foraging on Honeydew in the native Black Beech forests in the foothills of New Zealand's stunning Southern Alps.

Orohaki's environment has been well managed and protected by traditional owners for generations, ensuring that the bees and their environment & are thriving, not surviving.

The Beekeepers at Orohaki have decades of experience with outstanding knowledge within the region and with the harvesting of Honeydew. Orohaki Beekeepers do not use artificial substitute feeding. (Unknown to many consumers is that in many cases bees are given artificial sugars to keep them fed during cold periods where food sources may be at a low, lowering the quality of the honey

in the long-term).

Orohaki's careful management of their natural environment & storage of excess honey, which may be put back on hives in extended cold seasons, ensures the health, strength and longevity of Orohaki's colonies.

Orohaki bees are placed beside dense native Black Beech forests covered in glorious natural Honeydew, providing a consistent, natural and readily available food source.

At Black Beech Honey we believe in supporting ethical beekeeping practices, and environmental protection methods ensuring sustainability for future generations to come.

Orohaki's amazing product is guaranteed 100% pure, raw, unpasteurised & no artificial sugars.

With a unique natural process & superior management of Orohaki's environment & apiaries all contributes to a superior flavour, richness & texture loved by anyone lucky enough to be blessed with a taste! Single Origin & Wild Crafted!

THE SYMBIOTIC PROCESS TO CREATE HONEYDEW

Orohaki's black beech (fuscospora solandri) forest attracts aphids (sensoriaphis nothofagi) which digest the mineral dense sap on the native tree bark for protein building blocks and amino acids. This tiny aphid lives under the black spongy fungus that lives on the Black Beech trees in the middle of the South Island of New Zealand, commonly known as "sooty mould". After the aphid has digested the tree sap it then secretes a concentrated sugar-like substance on the trees which sparkles in the sunlight, hence the name “honeydew”.

It is due to this extraordinary and rare symbiotic process between tree, fungus, scale insect (aphid) and honeybee that gives Honeydew its amazing properties.

There are currently ongoing studies regarding the potential medicinal properties, nutritional, mineral & sugar analysis of honeydew.

Scientific information is available on this website under SCIENCE.

There have been studies completed already which NZ Honeydew is proven to have prebiotic activity (oligosaccharides which feed good bacteria), high levels of glucose oxidiser, higher than average peroxide values and ten times the mineral content of floral honeys!!

Orohaki bees love the readily available food source and feed on it to culminate it into an absolutely spectacular and delicious end product. Orohaki Honeydew is uniquely different not only in flavour and texture but in nutritional properties from regular honey made from flower blossom nectar.
